Kolkata, August 22: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rupa Ganguly on Tuesday said that apart from Hindus, all other religious identities were refugees in India. When asked about her views on Citizenship Bill, Ganguly said, "Only Hindus aren't refugees, Buddhists, Jains are refugees too who came from different parts of the world to India."

She also said that Bangladesh was meant for Muslims while India's Bengal is for Hindus. "Partition was done so Pakistan becomes Muslim nation; Bangladesh mainly for Muslims, Bengal part of India as it was for Hindus who returned from Bangladesh," Ganguly said.

The row over citizenship began after the National Register For Citizens (NRC) of Assam left out 40 lakh names. Ganguly had earlier lashed out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her remark warning of a “bloodbath” and “civil war” following the NRC row.

Ganguly had asked, “Is she (Banerjee) aware that there are a lot of illegal immigrants in West Bengal? As it is, what is happening in West Bengal today, is it any less than bloodbath or civil war? Doesn’t she know that every other day BJP karyakartas are being killed?”

Earlier this month, BJP President Amit Shah also addressed a rally in West Bengal and lashed out at Banerjee over the NRC row.
