New Delhi, January 5: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday distributed pamphlets in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar area as a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP's) door to door campaign to create awareness on Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). During his campaign, Shah also met Sikh refugees from Afghanistan living in Delhi's Amar Colony. Earlier in the day, Shah accused Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of instigating "riots" by "misleading" people on the act. He also alleged that the opposition is spreading lies on the CAA.
On Sunday Morning, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad during the awareness campaign on the CAA met a Pakistani refugee woman who has named her daughter "Nagrikta" which means citizenship. The Hindu refugee family was in news in December last year when they had named their newborn 'Nagrikta' to celebrate the passage Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019. The family resides at Delhi’s Majnu-ka-Tilla colony after they migrated from Pakistan. BJP working president JP Nadda also interacted with people in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad as part of the saffron party’s pro-CAA campaign on Sunday. Nadda termed the CAA as “humanitarian”. Defence Minister Rajnath also took part in a similar campaign in Lucknow, while Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman interacted with people in Jaipur.
The BJP has also launched a toll-free mobile number 88662-88662 to garner support for the CAA. During the BJP's 10-day mass contact drive, which started from January 5, people have been urged to give a miss call on the number. The CAA gives Indian citizenship only to non-Muslim migrants fleeing persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 was passed by Parliament in December last year. After the passage of the Bill, the country witnessed widespread protests.
