Bengaluru, July 31: Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, has been elected as the Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker on Wednesday. He has been elected as the speaker, unopposed. The newly elected Speaker has served as the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education in the BJP Government of Karnataka Kageri has served as MLA for 5 terms in his political career and is also renowned as a very disciplined politician. Kageri succeeds  KR Ramesh Kumar, who resigned on July 29soon after BS Yediyurappa government won floor test in the house.

Citing personal reasons, Kumar resigned from the legislative post on Monday, 14 months after he was unanimously elected as the Speaker. "I am resigning from this august post as Speaker of the state legislative Assembly for personal reasons. I thank all the members for cooperating with me during my 14-month long tenure in this chair," Kumar told the legislators in Kannada and left the House.

On July 29, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa won the floor test in the Assembly by voice vote. "Yediyurappa has won the confidence motion he moved by voice vote with more yes than nos. As there is no demand for division of votes by the opposition leader (Siddaramaiah), I declare the motion passed, proving majority support in the House," Speaker Kumar announced.
