New Delhi, June 25: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is observing a black day Today i.e. on June 25, the day when the UPA -led Congress government imposed emergency in the year 1975. The emergency was imposed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Reportedly, the decision┬аto observe a black-day was┬аtaken by the party earlier in one of its core-committee meetings.

Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley and other leaders took to Twitter to express their anger against the UPA government decision that time of┬аgiving a call for emergency. Jaitley, in one of his tweets, called the emergency decision of UPA a Tyranny. In series of tweets, he took the jibe against Congress for the move and alleged that how the decision created terror and fear in the country. Jaitley also compared Indira Gandhi to a Hitler.

Meanwhile, BJP President Amit Shah also slammed UPA for calling emergency in the year 1975. On his tweeter, he alleged that just to be in power emergency was imposed. Moreover, he also remarked due to emergency┬аfor 21 months people had to suffer.

To spread BJP's black day observance,┬аpress conferences are being held in different states. Reportedly, Amit Shah, the in-charge of the black day event, is in Gujarat state and will hold a press conference over there. Similarly,┬а Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is in Pune, Maharashtra. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has been deployed in Rajasthan while Textiles Minister Smriti Irani is in Odisha. Health Minister JP Nadda will be present in Uttrakhand whereas Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will be in Bihar and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar, in Karnataka.

Culture Minister Dr Mahesh Sharma will hold a press briefing in Chandigarh. According to BJP, June 25, 1975 emergency is regarded as one of the most undemocratic movements in Indian history.

To recall, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had declared a nationwide emergency between 1975 to 1975. During the 21-month period, elections were suspended, media was gagged and civil liberties were curbed. The then president Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed officially issued the emergency under Article 352 of the constitution due to prevailing 'internal disturbance'. The Emergency was in effect from 25 June 1975 until its withdrawal on 21 March 1977.

Besides during the emergency opposition party leaders like Jaiprakash Narayan, Morarji Desai, Chaudhary Charan Singh, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani were put behind the bars.
