Mumbai, July 6: The foot-in-mouth syndrome of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs is not something new and the latest one to join the list is Gopal Shetty. He is caught in a major controversy for saying, 'Christians did not contribute to the freedom struggle'. According to an ANI report, he called them 'angrez' (foreigners) and said that it was only the Hindus and Muslims who played a major role in India's freedom struggle.

According to a report on Times Now, when the channel contacted him asking him justification for the comments, Shetty was quite brazen and stated that whatever he said is on the record. He made these controversial remarks at a gathering during the Eid-e-Milad organised by the Shia Kabrastan Committee at Malad's Malvani.

This is not the first time that Shetty has made such an irrational comment, he had earlier also said that 'farmers committing suicide has become a fashion'. Post Shetty's recent controversial comment, Congress party has demanded a resignation, and All India Mahila Congress General Secretary Janet D'souza has planned to carry out a huge silent protest against Shetty's derogatory comment against the Christian community, as reported in MumbaiLive.
