It must be noted that in the 2015 assembly elections, out of the three seats, Araria and Jehanabad were held by the RJD, while Bhabhua was won by the BJP. The candidates that are in the fray are Sarfaraz Alam from Araria. Sarfaraz, the son of deceased RJD MP Mohammad Taslimuddin is contesting on the RJD ticket. Alam, a JD(U) MLA from Jokihat assembly seat, defected after the bypolls were announced.

In Jehanabad, the battle is between RJD's Sujay Yadav and JD(U)'s Abhiram Sharma. The seat was earlier held by Yadav's father Mundrika Singh Yadav, who passed away last year following a prolonged illness. In Bhabhua, Rinki Pandey is contesting on the BJP ticket. The seat was represented by BJP MLA Anand Bhushan Pandey who died last year.

To recall, the assembly by-polls to fill casual vacancies in Bihar legislative assembly were held on 21 August 2014. The 10 constituencies where polling took place were Narkatiaganj, Rajnagar (SC), Jale, Chapra, Hajipur, Mohiuddinnagar, Parbatta, Bhagalpur, Banka and Mohania (SC). The by-elections were necessitated due to the election of some members to the Lok Sabha and resignation of others.
