Patna, November 10: The result for Bihar assembly elections 2020 will be out on November 10, Tuesday. The Vidhan Sabha polls were held in three phases to elect members to the 17th legislative assembly for a total of 243 seats. The main contest is between the Mahagathbandhan, comprising of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress and Left Parties, and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) comprising of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Janata Dal-United (JD-U), Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) and Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) (HAM-S).
Exit polls, conducted on Saturday, suggest a clear win for the Mahagathbandhan. The post-poll survey is discarding most of the pre-poll surveys. While the opinion polls had indicated another term for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the exit polls are suggesting his exit from power. The official results will be declared on Tuesday by the Election Commission of India. In case of Mahagathbandhan victory, Tejashwi Yadav will be sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the first time. In case of NDA victory, Nitish Kumar will take oath as CM for the seventh time. Ahead of Bihar election results 2020, here's the outcome of past five polls in the state.
1995 Bihar Assembly Election
In 1995 Vidhan Sabha elections, Janata Dal got a decisive victory in the state with 167 seats of 324 seats. Lalu Prasad Yadav was elected as the Chief Minister. The first runner up was BJP with 41 seats, followed by 29 seats by Congress.
2000 Bihar Assembly Election
In 2000 Vidhan Sabha polls, RJD won 103 seats of 243 assembly seats (excludes Jharkhand). The first runner up was Bharatiya Janata Party with 39 seats, followed by 28 seats by Samta Party. Rabri Devi was elected as the CM.
2005 Bihar Assembly Election
Bihar Vidhan Sabha Polls were held twice in 2005. There was a fractured verdict in February 2005 elections. Since no government could be formed, fresh polls were held in October -November the same year. The JD(U) won 88 seats in the October-November 2005 election and ruled along with the BJP (55 seats). Nitish Kumar was elected as the CM.
2010 Bihar Assembly Election
Bihar Vidhan Sabha 2010 election was held in six phases. In 2010 polls, JD(U) emerged as the largest party with 115 seats and ruled along with the saffron party as part of the NDA under the leadership of Nitish Kumar.
2015 Bihar Assembly Election
2015 assembly election in Bihar were held in five phases. Before polls, the Janata Parivar (a group of six parties - JDU, RJD, Janata Dal (Secular), Indian National Lok Dal, Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) and Samajwadi Party) announced their intention to fight the election together with Nitish Kumar as CM candidate. Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also joined the Janata Parivar. However, the coalition was restructured as Mahagathbandhan after the Samajwadi Party, Indian National Lok Dal, Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) and Janata Dal (Secular) departed from the Janata Parivar.
The BJP led NDA fought Vidhan sabha polls alongside the LJP, the RLSP and HAM. In 2015 elections, RJD emerged as a single largest party with 81 seats, followed by JD(U) and BJP with 70 and 53 seats, respectively. The incumbent CM was Nitish Kumar.

Meanwhile, the results for 2020 Bihar polls will be declared on Tuesday. Notably, the electoral battle in the eastern state was the first major polling exercise after the novel coronavirus pandemic.
