A day after five civil rights activists were arrested in a nationwide swoop, the Pune police claimed on Wednesday that it has unearthed a "Maoist conspiracy hatched to overthrow the elected government" besides targeting top officials and political leaders.The alleged plot came to light after the police analysed the electronic devices, documents and other "highly incriminating evidences" seized from the five arrested persons, showing their links with the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), said Pune Deputy Commissioner of Police Shirish Sardeshpande.
Pune Police, in a press conference, said the members of CPI (Maoist) had planned terror activities in the country. They have connections with banned organisations in Jammu and Kashmir, the Pune Police said.

Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Deepak Kesarkar speaking to CNN News18 has said that the raids are a diversionary tactic. He further said that intellectuals could not support Naxals. Kesarkar claimed that raids were based on proof.
Activist Gautam Navlakha has issued a statement today over his arrest. He blamed the central government for shieling real culprits of the Bhima Koregaon violence. He also said that the arrests were a political ploy.

Pune police yesterday arrested five activists in connection with Bhima-Koregaon violence which took place on January 1 this year. Raids were conducted across five states on eight locations. Police was probing into Elgaar Parishad, a conclave that was held on December 31 last year in Shaniwada near Pune to mark 200th anniversary to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon.
Raids were conducted at the residences of seven activists in Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Goa. Sudha Bhardwaj, Gautam Navalakha, Varavra Rao, Vernon Gonzalves and Arun Ferreira were later arrested. Bhardwaj and Navlakha’s transit remand was put on hold. Navlakha will stay under house arrest till August 29, while Bhardwaj is put under house arrest till August 30. A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the arrests. The court will hear the matter at 3:45 pm today.
On January 1, the clashes erupted between Dalit groups and Maratha community during a rally organised by the groups commemorate the 1818 battle as the East India Company's army consisted of Mahars, a Dalit community, who defeated the upper-caste Peshwa's forces. Following the clashes, Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh leader Prakash Ambedkar had given a call for state-wide shut-down on January 3, which too witnessed violence in Maharashtra.
