Chennai, August 28: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) today passes a resolution at party's General Council Meeting urging the Union government to confer Bharat Ratna to former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi. The former party chief died at the age of 94 in Chennai’s Kauvery Hospital on August 7. Before entering politics, he worked in the Tamil film industry as a screenwriter. His most notable movie was Parasakthi. Karunanidhi entered politics at the age of 14 and participated in anti-Hindi agitations. He also served as chief minister of Tamil Nadu for five times between 1969 and 2011.
Today, in the party meeting, MK Stalin, the younger son of the late DMK President Karunanidhi, became the new party Chief. Meanwhile, senior leader and party principal secretary Duraimurugan was elected as the treasurer. After being elected as the President, Stalin paid tribute to CN Annadurai and M Karunanidhi.
The general council meeting passed four resolutions out of which the third resolution was electing Stalin as party president. Stalin was serving as the working president of the party since 2017. Stalin was contesting against his brother MK Alagiri in the party presidential election, which was held today. He became deputy chief minister of Tamil Nadu in 2009.
