Basirhat Violence Row: MHA Seeks Report From West Bengal Governor, Police Stop BJP Leaders From Taking Remains of Deceased Workers to Party Office

With Union Home Ministry seeking a report from West Bengal Governor on the violence in Basirhat in North 24 Parganas district, police forces stopped BJP leaders in Basirhat this incited violence again.

Kolkata, June 9: Hours after the Union Home Ministry sought a report from West Bengal Governor on the violence in Basirhat in North 24 Parganas district, politics over the carrying the remains of the deceased BJP workers to party office gained momentum. State police forces stopped BJP leaders in Basirhat this incited violence again.

Reacting on the violence, Union Ministry of Home Affairs reportedly sought a report from the state government on the violence, after state BJP leader Mukul Roy met Amit Shah. The police and Rapid Action Force personnel have been deployed in the area. West Bengal: 5 Killed in BJP-TMC Clash in Basirhat City of North 24 Parganas District.

The MHA in its letter wrote, as quoted by ANI, "It's strongly advised to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to maintain law & order, peace and public tranquillity. It's also requested to take strict action against officials found delinquent in the discharge of their duty."

Meanwhile, BJP has called for 12-hour 'bandh' in Basirhat and in entire West Bengal tomorrow. Informing more, BJP leader Rahul Sinha said, "Party has called a 12-hour 'bandh' in Basirhat and in entire West Bengal tomorrow, we will observe the black day. BJP will move court over Police role. Remains of the deceased are being taken to their native places for the funeral."

On the notice, Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi too expressed his concern about the violent incidents in Sandesh Khali, North 24 Parganas yesterday and other parts of West Bengal recently, informed Press Secretary to Governor of West Bengal.

He added that Governor is sad at unfortunate loss of lives and properties of citizens. Extends his heartfelt sympathy for families of the deceased. Appeals to all to see to it that no violent incidents take place and peace and harmony to prevail in the state.

Meanwhile, BJP MP from Hooghly Locket Chatterjee, while reacting on Basirhat violence, said, "Families of the deceased want to take the remains to party office but Mamata's police are stopping us saying that last rites will be held in the village. Earlier on Saturday, violence broke in which a Trinamool Congress worker and two leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party have been killed in Sandeshkhali in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. Sandeshkhali is a part of the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency, which is currently represented by actress-turned-politician Nusrat Jahan.

Reports state that the violent clashes broke out at 7 pm on Saturday after an altercation between BJP workers and Trinamool members, who were holding a booth-level meet at a marketplace in Hatgacha panchayat area. While the TMC leader - Qayyum Mollah - was shot and hacked to death, the two BJP leaders were killed. However, BJP claimed that five of its workers have been killed while TMC has said it fears six of its workers are dead.
