Asansol, April 29: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Babul Supriyo's car was vandalised in West Bengal on Monday. The incident comes a day after BJP candidate Joy Bandyopadhyay was attacked by motorbike borne goons, allegedly of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). According to a tweet by ANI, Supriyo's car was vandalised outside the polling station in Asansol on the day when people went to poll for the fourth phase in the state. Reports inform that after the incident, police resorted to lathi-charge to bring the situation in control.

Voting across 72 Lok Sabha constituencies spread over nine states began at 7 AM on Monday as the fourth phase of the mega seven-phase electoral exercise kicked off. In West Bengal, prominent candidates in the fourth phase include Union Minister Babul Supriyo (BJP), who faces veteran actor Moon Moon Sen (Trinamool Congress) in West Bengal's Asansol, his colleague Giriraj Singh (BJP), who faces former JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar (CPI) in Bihar's Begusarai. On Sunday, the BJP had alleged that its candidate Joy Bandyopadhyay was attacked by motorbike borne goons of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Howrah district and five workers of the party were injured. According to reports, the BJP workers later put up a road blockade in front of Bagnan police station to protest the attack by the TMC. The ruling party, however, denied all the charges against them.
The seven-phase Lok Sabha elections began on April 11 and would conclude on May 19. Counting of votes will take place on May 23. In the fourth phase, the BJP will be defending 45 of the seats it won in the 2014 Lok Sabha battle -- 13 in Rajasthan, 12 in Uttar Pradesh, eight in Maharashtra, five in Madhya Pradesh, three in Bihar, three in Jharkhand and one in West Bengal.
