Lucknow, July 30: A police raid was carried out at Samajwadi Party lawmaker Azam Khan's Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur earlier on Tuesday. The search operation conducted by UP Police comes days after the sub-divisional magistrate charged him of land grabbing by allegedly building one of the varsity's gates on government premises.

The reason behind the police raid was yet to be ascertained by the time preliminary reports had emerged. No arrests were carried out, neither any information was disclosed on whether any document or asset had been seized from the university's premises. Uttar Pradesh Police Issued Lookout Notice Against Azam Khan Aide

Earlier, on July 25, the SDM had slapped a notice to Khan after it was found that one of the gates of Jauhar University is built on Public Works Department (PWD) land. The SP leader, who is the Chancellor of the varsity, has been asked to remove the gates within 15 days or the administration would issue its demolition order.

A one-time fine of Rs 3.27 crore has also been levied on the Rampur MP. Subsequently, the SDM also ordered an additional per-day fine of Rs 9,10,000 till the gate is removed by Khan.

Apart from the Jauhar University case, Khan has been accused of usurping government lands at other places as well. His name featured in the UP government's portal where it issued the list of "land mafia" members.

The SP veteran, however, has rejected all the allegations levelled against him, calling them politically motivated. Khan said the BJP government in the state and the Centre wants to frame him in "false cases".
