Aurangabad, Aug 17: A corporator of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) was assaulted in the Aurangabad municipal corporation for reportedly opposing a condolence motion which the civic body passed on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's demise.
The video of the incident, shared by Maharashtra Times, shows Matin being manhandled in the corporation by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members, who accused him of being anti-national.
The corporators who attacked Matin are: Pramod Rathod, Dilip Thorat, Madhuri Avdhant, Rameshwar Bhadve and Raj Wankhede -- all members of the BJP.
Here is the footage of the assault shared below:
Vajpayee, 93, died on Thursday at AIIMS in Delhi. He was hospitalised since June 11, after he had contracted infection in the urinary tract and developed chest congestion.
The former three-time PM's overall health had deteriorated in 2009, after he suffered a stroke which led to dementia. He was since left speech-impaired.
Although Vajpayee was admired from the anti-BJP ranks as well due to his "statesman approach", the AIMIM has reiterated its dissent towards the former PM. Party chief Asaduddin Owaisi had, in 2015, opposed the Bharat Ratna accorded to Vajpayee, saying, "He had provocated Hindus in 1992 to demolish the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya".
