India's one of the most loved politicians, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, breathed his last at AIIMS, Delhi, after the prolonged illness, earlier today. The medical bulletins in the previous 24 hours weren't showing any positive signs either, and come as it may, the former Indian PM passed away on Friday eve.

Tributes from all quarters poured in for the 'tallest politician' in India, something which politicians cut across party lines called him. Leaders and prominent personalities across different spectrums paid rich tributes to Atal Behari Vajpayee, who was also the longest living PM of India, until today.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi who visited Atal Bihari Vajpayee, twice in last 24 hours, expressed grief on his Twitter account. In a series of seven tweets, PM Modi poured his heart out while mentioning the former Indian PM. In one of his tweets, Modi wrote, “India grieves the demise of our beloved Atal Ji. His passing away marks the end of an era. He lived for the nation and served it assiduously for decades. My thoughts are with his family, BJP Karyakartas and millions of admirers in this hour of sadness. Om Shanti.”

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, a close-aide of AB Vajpayee during his tenure expressed his sadness on the demise too. In a series of tweets, the Home Minister shared his experiences with the former PM. In one of his tweets, Rajnath Singh wrote, “Pained beyond words at the demise of Shri Atalji. He had cherished the ideal of a developed and powerful India in which all persons lived together in unity, peace and harmony.”

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, also posted a heartfelt message on the micro-blogging site. Omar wrote, “Vajpayee Sahib is no more & I feel a personal sense of loss at his passing. Thank you, sir, for the opportunities, for the trust you reposed in me, for the opportunities to travel with you & to learn from you. You will be greatly missed #AtalBihariVajpayee.

Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, who is also an ally in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Centre, wrote a message and even penned an emotional letter on Vajpayee’s death.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi was not left behind to express his anguish on AB Vajpayee’s death. On his Twitter account, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “Today India lost a great son.  Former PM, Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji, was loved and respected by millions. My condolences to his family & all his admirers. We will miss him.”

Former Indian PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on December 25,  1924, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. He became the first non-Congress Prime Minister and remains so till date the only PM, to complete a full five-year term.
