The by-elections to 64 constituencies across Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh will be held on October 21.

New Delhi, September 21: The by-elections to 64 constituencies across several states in India will be held on October 21, along with the Assembly Elections in Maharashtra and Haryana. The counting of votes and results of the by-polls will take place on October 24, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora informed on Saturday. The 64 constituencies where polling will be held are spread across Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh will be held on October 21. Along with the by-polls across several states, assembly elections for the 288-member Maharashtra and 90-member Haryana assembly will be held on October 21 and the results will be declared on October 24. The CEC informed that the notification for the elections will be issued on September 27, the last date for filing nomination is October 4, while the scrutiny of the nomination papers will be done on October 5. In the last assembly elections held in 2014, the BJP had won 122 seats in Maharashtra with its ally Shiv Sena with 63 seats. The Congress had won 42 seats while the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) had won 41 seats and others managed just 20. In Maharashtra, the Congress and the NCP had contested the 2014 Assembly polls separately after sharing power for 15 years in the state.

In the last assembly elections in Haryana in 2014, the BJP won 47 seats followed by the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) at 19 while the ruling Congress managed just 15 seats.
