In what was seen as the first electoral fight after the opposition formed the INDIA bloc against the BJP-led NDA, the opposition parties bagged 4 out of 7 seats that went to bypolls on September 5. The India Bloc members retained Puthuppally, Ghosi and Dumri seats, as well as wrested Dhupguri. The BJP registered victory in Bageshwar, Boxanagar and Dhanpur.

New Delhi, September 8: The by-election results of seven assembly seats will be declared today. Counting of votes for the bypoll results of Ghosi, Dhupguri, Puthuppally, Bageshwar, Dumri, Boxanagar and Dhanpur shall begin at 8 am. The results will assume significance for the opposition's INDIA bloc and the BJP-led alliance as these are the first elections since the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance was formed. The assembly seats of Dhupguri in West Bengal, Puthuppally in Kerala, Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, Dumri in Jharkhand and Boxanagar in Tripura went to bypolls due to the deaths of the sitting MLAs. The bypolls in Uttar Pradesh's Ghosi and Tripura's Dhanpur were necessitated due to their MLAs' resignation.

Ghosi By-Election Result 2023:

In Ghosi, the contest is between SP turncoat Dara Singh Chauhan, who is now contesting on BJP's ticket, and Samajwadi Party's Sudhakar Singh. The SP candidate is also backed by the Congress. Dara Singh Chauhan quit the Samajwadi Party to join the BJP in July. Dhupguri By-Election Result 2023:

The Dhupguri by-election 2023 witnessed a three-cornered fight between Trinamool Congress (TMC), BJP and Congress-backed CPI(M). Tapasi Roy, the widow of CRPF jawan Jagannath Roy who was martyred in a terror attack in March 2021, contested on BJP's ticket. Bageshwar By-Election Result 2023:

The bypoll in Uttarakhand's Bageshwar assembly constituency was necessitated by the sudden demise of BJP MLA Chandan Ram Dass. The BJP nominated Dass's wife Parwati who faced a challenge from Basant Kumar of the Congress party. Samajwadi Party's Bhagawati Prasad is also in the fray.

Puthuppally By-Election Result 2023:

The by-election in Kerala's Puthupally seat was necessitated after the demise of sitting Congress MLA and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Chandy represented the constituency from 1970 for a record breaking 53 years. The Congress fielded Chandy's son Chandy Oommen. CPI(M)'s Jaick C Thomas and BJP's Lijin Lal are also in the fray.

Dumri By-Election Result 2023:

In Jharkhand's Dumri, the JMM or Jharkhand Mukti Morcha fielded its deceased legislator Jagarnath Mahto's wife Bebi Devi. She's been projected as the INDIA bloc's joint candidate against the BJP-led NDA's Yashoda Devi. Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM also tried its luck in the Dumri by-election and nominated Abdul Rizvi as its candidate.

Boxanagar By-Election Result 2023:

There is a direct contest between Mizan Hossain of CPI(M) and BJP's Taffajal Hossain in Boxanagar assembly by-election 2023. While the Congress did not nominate its candidate and extended support to Mizan Hossain, Tipra Motha Party neither contested the bypoll, nor did it back any candidate. The seat fell vacant after the death of sitting CPI-M MLA Samsul Haque.

Dhanpur By-Election Result 2023:

The CPI(M) fielded Kaushik Chanda and the BJP nominated Bindu Debnath in Dhanpur assembly by-election. The by-election in Dhanpur seat was necessitated after Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik resigned from the assembly, days after her election to the Lok Sabha as a BJP nominee.
