Assam NRC Row: Supreme Court Calls it 'Human Problem of Huge Magnitude'

New Delhi, August 28: The Supreme Court on Tuesday termed the Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC) as a human problem of high magnitude and sought a report from the NCR coordinator on the same. The top Court said that there is a second chance for people who have not been included in the list, which is touted to be a proof of Assamese identity. Earlier this week, the Apex Court had directed the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) coordinator to provide it with the data of district-wise percentage of the population excluded from the NRC draft in the state.
A two-judge bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi and also comprising of Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, sought the response of all the stakeholders including All Assam Students Union, All Assam Minority Students Union on the Centre's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in this regard.
The final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published on July 30 with 2.9 crore names out of the total 3.29 crore applicants in India's northeastern state of Assam. The NRC will include the names of all Indian citizens who have been residing in Assam before March 25, 1971.
Registrar General of India Sailesh informed that the names of 40.07 lakh applicants did not find a place in the historic document. The first draft of the NRC was published during the intervening night of December 31 and January 1 this year, containing 1.9 crore names. He said the exercise is unparalleled in size and is a legal process done under the direct supervision of the Supreme Court.
Registrar General of India Sailesh asked people whose names were left out not to panic and said that the process for making claims and objections would begin on August 30 and continue till September 28. The government has set December 31 as the last date to complete the final process.
