Itanagar, May 21: Hours after the heinous act of 11 people killed in a militant attack by insurgents in Tirap region in Arunachal Pradesh came to the fore, another shocking incident of attack on polling team by around 500 masked men in Kurung Kumey district made the headlines. The polling team was on its way to conduct re-poll in Kurung Kumey district on Sunday evening.

According to a report, published by The Arunachal Times, the polling team was on its way to Nampe where re-polling for two stations were to be done on Tuesday. They were then attacked by around 500 masked men with sticks, machetes and rifles. With security personnel outnumbered, no exchange of firing or retaliation was done from the EC side. Earlier, the EC had ordered re-polling for two polling stations, one in Nampe under Koloriang assembly seat in Kurung Kumey district and the other in Gimba under Tali assembly seat in Kra Daadi district.

It is to be known that polling for two Lok Sabha seats and 60 assembly seats in the state had taken place on April 11. With the incident of snatching of EVMs took place, the EC sent fresh EVMs and other equipment and more security personnel was sent to the polling station again on Monday to conduct re-poll on Tuesday.

The sitting legislator in Arunachal Pradesh assembly, Tirong Aboh, is among the 11 people killed in a militant attack by insurgents in Tirap region. The deceased, an MLA of the National People's Party (NPP), was gunned down along with 6 family members at his residence. The attackers are suspected to be members of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN).
