New Delhi, August 18: Former Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's health deteriorated on Sunday. According to the latest update, Jaitley is on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support. ECMO is an extracorporeal technique of providing prolonged cardiac and respiratory support to a patient. It is also known as extracorporeal life support (ECLS). Meanwhile, IABP is a mechanical device that increases myocardial oxygen perfusion and indirectly increases cardiac output through afterload reduction. Diastolic inflation increases blood flow to the coronary arteries. Arun Jaitley Health Update: Former Finance Minister Admitted to AIIMS for Medical Check-up.

Earlier in the day, Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat visited him in the hospital. The former union minister was admitted to AIIMS on August 9 after he faced breathing issues. President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah had also visited Jaitley at AIIMS.

Jaitley had undergone kidney transplant last year and went to the United States in February for a medical check-up. He had also requested PM Modi not to include him in the new Union Cabinet citing health reasons.
