New Delhi, August 5: The Congress party seems to be divided internally over its stand on the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35 A from Jammu and Kashmir. While party leaders in Parliament including Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kapil Sibal openly opposed the move by the Narendra Modi on Monday, some leaders of the party seemed to be speaking a different language on social media. In fact, Congress Chief Whip Bhuvaneshwar Kalita reportedly quit the party over Article 370. Kalita, in his resignation, said that issuing a whip to oppose Article 370 was against the mood of the nation and that the Congress was moving towards destruction. Among other leaders of the party who seemed to be supporting the abrogation of Article 370 was INC National Spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill. Shergill took to Twitter saying that while he personally supported the revocation of Article 370, he would have wanted it to happen Constitutionally. "My personal point of view: I support abrogation of Art 370 (as opening words say it’s temporary) but Only and Only in accordance with provisions and methodology provided by the Constitution of India which mandates consent of J&K State Assembly - any other way is Unconstitutional," Shergill tweeted. Meanwhile, UP Congress MLA Aditi Singh also posted a cryptic tweet that left people wondering whether she supported or opposed the abrogation of Article 370. "United we stand! Jai Hind #Article370," Singh wrote on Twitter.
Meanwhile, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi was so far silent on the issue. There was no reaction from Gandhi even as leaders from his party including P Chidambaram continued to oppose the Modi government's move.
Home Minister Amit Shah proposed a resolution in Rajya Sabha repealing Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. The Modi government also issued a notification repealing Article 35A from Jammu and Kashmir and also bifurcating the state into two union territories - Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
