New Delhi, August 6: Minutes after the Parliament approved a resolution ending applicability of Article 370 of the Constitution to Jammu and Kashmir, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nirmal Singh removed the state's flag from his official vehicle. In a video, Nirmal Singh, who is a former deputy chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, is seen removing the state's flag from his car.

Under the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir by Article 370, the state had its own official flag apart from the national flag. The red colour on Jammu and Kashmir flag, which no longer valid, represented the blood of people who died during the 13 July 1931 demonstration. In the middle, a white plough symbolised farmers. Three vertical white stripes represented the three regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. Jammu and Kashmir Loses Privileges Under Article 370, Article 35A: What Does it Mean For Kashmiris and Other Indians?

The flag was officially adopted by the Constituent Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir on 7 June 1952. With the abrogation of Article 370 to the state, the flag lost its official status. Jammu and Kashmir Order 2019: Read Full Text of Modi Government's Notification on Article 370 And Article 35A.

In a big triumph for the government, both the Houses of the Parliament have passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill 2019 and adopted the resolution to scrap Article 370 of the Constitution which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, paving way for bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories (UTs) -- Jammu and Kashmir with an Assembly and Ladakh sans one.
