New Delhi, August 5: Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday in a historic declaration announced that Article 370 has been revoked from Jammu and Kashmir amid massive uproar from Opposition in Rajya Sabha. Article 370 gave special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Shah also introduced the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Second Amendment) Bill in Rajya Sabha. The bill, approved by the Union Cabinet last week, paves way for the implementation of the 10 percent quota for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmir has been in a state of uncertainty for the past few days after the Central Government increased the deployment of paramilitary forces in not just the valley but the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir. The government suspended the Amarnath Yatra midway and asked the yatris to leave Kashmir urgently, citing security threats from across the border.
Between Thursday and Saturday, all tourists and non-Kashmiri students in Jammu and Kashmir were asked to leave teh state as well, leading to rumours of Article 35A and 370 being removed and even reports of trifurcation of the state.
On Sunday, Section 144 was imposed in Srinagar and state leaders including Omar Abdullah of the National Conference and Mehbooba Mufti of PDP were placed under house arrest. Internet services were also suspended in the entire state on Monday morning even as telephone lines were running.
