Article 370: Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti Detained After Special Status to Jammu and Kashmir is Revoked
Former Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) head Mehbooba Mufti was detained on Monday. According to reports, she was taken to a government guest house in Srinagar. On Sunday, Mufti and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah were placed under house arrest.
Srinagar, August 5: Hours after the Narendra Modi government introduced a resolution in the Rajya Sabha to abrogate Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were detained on Monday. According to reports, Mehbooba Mufti was taken to a government guest house in Srinagar. On Sunday, both the leaders were placed under house arrest. Earlier in the day, the Modi government also abolished Article 35A by Presidential order. The state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Jammu and Kashmir will have its own legislative assembly, Ladakh will not have any state legislature.
After the Narendra Modi’s decision, Mufti slammed the Centre. She called it 'the darkest day in Indian democracy'. She tweeted, “Today marks the darkest day in Indian democracy. Decision of J&K leadership to reject 2 nation theory in 1947 & align with India has backfired. Unilateral decision of GOI to scrap Article 370 is illegal & unconstitutional which will make India an occupational force in J&K.”

The week before taking away the special status, the Ministry of Home Affairs reported deployed more than 40,000 troops in the Kashmir Valley. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had also visited Jammu and Kashmir in July.
