Srinagar, August 5: Hours after the Narendra Modi government introduced a resolution in the Rajya Sabha to abrogate Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were detained on Monday. According to reports, Mehbooba Mufti was taken to a government guest house in Srinagar. On Sunday, both the leaders were placed under house arrest. Article 370 Scrapped in Jammu and Kashmir: Rift in Congress Over Party's Stand, no Word From Rahul Gandhi.
Earlier in the day, the Modi government also abolished Article 35A by Presidential order. The state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Jammu and Kashmir will have its own legislative assembly, Ladakh will not have any state legislature.
After the Narendra Modi’s decision, Mufti slammed the Centre. She called it 'the darkest day in Indian democracy'. She tweeted, “Today marks the darkest day in Indian democracy. Decision of J&K leadership to reject 2 nation theory in 1947 & align with India has backfired. Unilateral decision of GOI to scrap Article 370 is illegal & unconstitutional which will make India an occupational force in J&K.”
