Srinagar, October 3: Almost two months after the restrictions were imposed by the Central government, Advisor to Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik -- Farooq Khan -- confirmed that political leaders of Kashmir would be released from detention soon. He, however, made it clear that this would be done only after the complete analysis of the situation by the administration.

Addressing the media in Srinagar on Thursday, Khan stated that the administration would only release the political leaders of Kashmir region, if the leaders of Jammu region are released first. He said, as quoted by news agency ANI, "Yes, one by one after analysis of every individual, they will be released." The decision to release the political leaders from detention after more than 55 days comes amid the reports of the second tier of the Panchayat Raj system in the state, which was announced by the Block Development Council. Around 400 political leaders -- including former chief ministers Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah and People's Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti -- were placed under house arrest post the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir.

Citing repercussions of the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of the state into two Union territories, the stringent security measures like prohibitory orders and switching of phone and internet facilities were taken by the administration. In the process, all the major political leaders were put under detention.

Following this, human rights forums and the United Nations sought Narendra Modi-led Central government to solve the Kashmir lockdown. However, the Indian government stated that it is their internal matter, and they are capable of managing it on their own.
