According to a press release, President Ram Nath Kovind appointed former union minister Arif Mohammad Khan as Governor of Kerala. President Kovind sent Kalraj Mishra to Rajasthan as Governor and appointed former BJP MP Bandaru Dattatraya as Governor of Himachal Pradesh. Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari has been appointed as Governor of Maharashtra. "The appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices," read the press statement issued by President's Secretariat.
Arif Mohammad Khan, who had quit the Congress over its leadership stand against the Shah Bano case verdict, recently earned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's praise for his stand on the triple talaq practice. Union Home Minister and BJP chief Amit Shah had also praised Khan, calling him a reformist for his views against instant triple talaq. There was a buzz that Khan could be sent to Rajya Sabha as a nominated member.
Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan, who heads BJP's Tamil Nadu unit, lost in all her attempts at becoming an MP or MLA from the state till date. Soundararajan contested two Assembly elections and Parliament elections unsuccessfully in the past. Kalraj Mishra served as a cabinet minister in the first term of the Modi government. Prior to his appointment as Governor of Rajasthan, Mishra was Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
Bandaru Dattatraya was elected to the Lok Sabha from Secunderabad constituency four times. He served as Minister of State for Labour and Employment during the first term of the Modi government. Bhagat Singh Koshyari, an RSS veteran, is the first BJP president for Uttarakhand. He also served as second Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2001 to 2002.
