The Lalu Prasad Yadav-led RJD was on the defending turf in two of the three constituencies. Araria and Jehanabad were represented by its lawmakers till they died last year.
The Bhabhua seat was held by the BJP. Bypolls were necessited following the demise of legislator Anand Bhushan Pandey.
In Araria bypolls, the fight was direct between the RJD's Sarfaraz Alam, son of deceased MP Mohammed Taslimuddin, and BJP's Pradeep Sinha, who emerged the first runner-up from the seat in the 2014 general elections.
In Jehanabad, the RJD is squared against the JD(U). The latter had fielded Abhiram Sharma to take on RJD's Sujay Yadav, son of deceased MLA from the seat Mundrika Singh Yadav.
From Bhabhua, the Mahagathbandhan has nominated Congress' leader Shambhu Patel to take on deceased legislator's wife Rinki Pandey, fielded by the BJP.
