Anti-Sikh Riots Convict Sajjan Kumar in Trouble Again, Patiala House Court to Hear Second Case Tomorrow

New Delhi, December 19: A day after Congress leader was convicted in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case by the Delhi High Court and was sentenced to life imprisonment, more troubles are waiting for him. As per the information, Kumar has been named as accused of charges of murder and rioting in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case pertaining to the killings in Delhi’s Sultanpuri area. Earlier, the Delhi High Court had convicted Sajjan Kumar in the murder and rioting in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case on Monday. Facing criticism, the Congress leader resigned from the primary membership of the party on Tuesday. The case was heard by Justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel, who set aside the lower court order.
Announcing the verdict, the HC bench said, “In the summer of 1947, during partition, several people were massacred. Thirty-seven years later Delhi was the witness of a similar tragedy. The accused enjoyed political patronage and escaped trial.”
Besides Kumar, the bench also sentenced life imprisonment to Captain Bhagmal, Girdhari Lal and former Congress councillor Balwan Khokhar. Also, Kishan Khokkar and former legislator Mahender Yadav were given to 10 years imprisonment. Sajjan has been asked to surrender before December 31, 2018. The case relates to the killing of five people in the Delhi Cantonment area after the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984. Following the recommendations of the Justice GT Nanavati Commission, CBI registered a case in 2005 against Sajjan Kumar and five others for the killing of five Sikhs - Kehar Singh, Raghuvender Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Narender Pal Singh and Kuldeep Singh - in Delhi Cantonment's Raj Nagar area. The HC had reserved its order in October on the CBI plea that challenged the trial's court judgment.
