New Delhi, December 30: Members of the Indian National Congress' youth wing have taken cue from the protesters in Hong Kong, as they wore masks to hide their identities during a protest march against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the national capital on Monday. The Youth Congress workers wore identical masks, in an apparent bid to prevent themselves from being identified by security personnel. Priyanka Gandhi Says Congress Will Move High Court Against UP Police Crackdown on CAA Protesters, Slams Yogi Adityanath's 'Revenge Politics'.

In Hong Kong, where the protest against the extradition law has now transformed into a movement seeking enhanced autonomy from Beijing, the demonstrators had resorted to the wearing of masks at public places to conceal their identities. The masked rallies rattled the government, with the administration announcing a ban on wearing masks in public in October this year. Despite the ban, a section of protesters continue the use of mask during the demonstrations.

The anti-CAA stir erupted earlier this month, after the Centre tabled the Citizenship Amendment Bill for passage in the Parliament. After the legislation was cleared by both the Houses, thousands emerged on the streets in India's northeast to protest the new law. Subsequently, the agitation moved to all parts of the nation, with a section of Muslims viewing, along with the proposed nationwide National Register of Citizenship (NRC), as a ploy to strip them of their citizenship.
