Anti-CAA Protests in Uttar Pradesh: Aligarh City Schools to Remain Closed on December 23

Aligarh, December 22: All schools in city area of Aligarh district will remain closed on Monday, December 23. The Aligarh district administration took the call to keep schools shut on Monday in view of the violent clashes that took place between the police and the protestors over the past three days. As many as 18 people have lost their lives in the alleged police action that followed the violent protests in several districts of Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, the death toll in the violent protests has gone up to 18 though the UP DGP O.P. Singh claimed that 15 persons had died so far. He said five deaths had been reported from Meerut, two from Bijnor, three from Ferozabad, two from Sambhal and one each from Rampur, Lucknow and Varanasi. CAA Protests Reaches From Jamia to Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, AMU Administration Suspends Varsity Functions Till January 5.

The DGP said that 131 FIRs had been lodged in connection with the violence and 879 persons had been arrested. He said over 5000 people have been confined. The number of injured police personnel is 288.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi made an unscheduled visit to Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday and met the families of the two persons killed in the recent violence over the new citizenship law.

Congress sources said that she visited Nehtaur area of the district to meet the families of Anas and Suleman, who were killed in the recent violence over protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

She also met the family members of Omraj Saini, who was shot at by the police and is presently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Meerut. "People have died in an unprecedented incident which should be probed into. I have come to know that the family members of the victims were harrassed when they went to lodge FIRs against the police. Also, the CAA is anti-people, anti-poor. Those who are living here for centuries will now be asked for papers," Priyanka Gandhi said.
