Raipur, December 11: The Election Commission of India has begun the counting of votes for Chhattisgarh – went to polls in the recently contested Assembly elections 2018. The poll battle in these six constituencies – Antagarh (ST), Bhanupratappur (ST), Kanker (ST), Keshkal (ST), Kondagaon (ST), Narayanpur (ST) – is primarily wedged between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and the BSP-Janta Congress alliance. Antagarh (ST): For this reserved seat, BJP has repeated their candidate and fielded sitting MLA Vikram Usendi. Congress has given the ticket to Anoop Nag, instead of Manturam Pawar who lost by 5,000 votes last time. BSP has fielded Hemant Poyam, and AAP has given the ticket to Santram Sarphe (Salam). Bhanupratappur (ST): For this reserved seat, Congress has fielded their post-graduate sitting MLA Manoj Singh Mandavi, who defeated BJP’s Satish Latiya by 15,000 votes in 2013. Kanker (ST): Here, both Congress and BJP have replaced their candidates. Congress has replaced sitting MLA Shanker Dhruwa with Shishupal Shori, while BJP has replaced Sanjay Kodopi with Hira Markam. Keshkal (ST): In this constituency, a trilateral contest is expected between the ruling BJP, the Congress and the Janta Congress-BSP alliance. Congress has repeated its sitting MLA Sant Ram Netam, who defeated BJP’s Sevakram Netam in 2013. This time BJP has given the ticket to Harishankar Netam. Kondagaon (ST): From this constituency, Congress has fielded sitting postgraduate lawmaker Mohan Lal Markam against Lata Usendi. Narendra Netam is contesting on Janta Congress ticket, while CPI Has fielded Ramchandra Nag from this seat. Check here for live updates for Kondagaon.
Narayanpur (ST): For this reserved seat, BJP has repeated its sitting MLA Kedarnath Kashyap against Congress’ Chandan Singh Kashyap. Janta Congress has given the ticket to Baliram Kachlam, while AAP is testing its field with Narendra Kumar Nag. Check here for live updates for Narayanpur.
The counting of votes is expected to conclude in the next few hours, with the Election Commission of India scheduled to declare the final results by the end of the day. In case of a BJP victory, Dr Raman Singh would continue to remain the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. If the Congress succeeds in routing the saffron camp, the party is expected to take a cautious decision on choosing the CM, while BSP-Janta Congress Alliance might choose Ajit Jogi as their CM candidate.
