Congress became the single largest party in Meghalaya as their candidate Miani D Shira won the Ampati Assembly seat. The seat fell vacated as her father Mukul Sangma quit early this year after he won in two seats.
Miani D Shira won by 3191 votes. She won a total of 14,259 votes against NPP candidate Clement G Momin who received 11,069 votes. By-polls were necessitated after the former chief minister Mukul Sangma who won from two constituencies left the seat.

Congress candidate Miani D Shira is leading by over 400 votes against her rival candidate NPP's C G Momin. The Ampati seat fell vacant after Congress leader Mukul Sangma vacated it as he won from two seats.
According to the latest trends, Congress is leading with 11,677 votes while NPP is following with 9321 votes. Independent candidate has managed 302 votes. NOTA votes have increased to 180.
Congress is leading with 8099 votes after third round of counting in Ampati Assembly seat. NPP is following with 6746 votes and Independent candidate has 237. Interestingly, NOTA also got 125 votes.
The counting of votes have begin in Ampati Assembly. The by-polls is a test for the Congress party in Meghalaya. Fresh voting was held in Ampati on Monday with a voter turnout of 90 percent.
By-election results of Ampati constituency in Meghalaya will be declared on Thursday. By-polls at Ampati was necessitated after the former chief minister Mukul Sangma who won from two constituencies left the seat. Sangma had won from both Ampati and Songsak in the Assembly elections.He then left constituency in the East Garo Hills district and vacated Ampati, from where he had been elected for six consecutive times. Reportedly, Ampati recorded a voter turnout of 90.55 percent which is slightly less than the of the general elections held in February when 90.70 per cent polling was registered. 90 percent voting was registered in 24 out of 39 polling stations. The highest voter turnout was recorded in Jelbongpara polling station with 96.81 percent and the lowest was at Morkona with 83.52 percent.
The polls hold great significance for Congress to form government. If Congress wins, they can form government.Congress had won 21 seats in the last assembly polls. With Sangma leaving Ampati, Congress came down to 20 seats. For this seat, Congress had fielded Mukul Sangma's daughter Miani D Shira, who is contesting her first ever election.
Meanwhile Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed confidence in his party, National People's Party (NPP) winning the Assembly seat, who has fielded Clement G Momin as their candidate.
The Congress and NPP aggressively campaigned for the bypolls ahead of the voting. The United Democratic Party (UDP) and other partners of Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) have decided to support the NPP candidate.
