Amit Shah's Kolkata Rally Ends in Violence; TMC, BJP Workers Injured in Police Lathi-Charge

Kolkata, May 14: Clashes broke out during Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah’s roadshow in Kolkata today after sticks were hurled at his truck. After the situation became tense, police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. According to reports, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members hurled bricks at Vidyasagar College at Shankar Ghose Lane in Kolkata. Stones were also pelted at Amit Shah's convoy from a college hostel on Bidhan Sarani. The road show - the 'Save Republic' rally" --- had started around 4.30 pm from Esplanade in central Kolkata. Yesterday, Shah was also denied permission by the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal to hold a rally in Jadavpur, which goes to polls in the final phase of Lok Sabha elections 2019. According to news agency ANI, Shah was not been permitted to land his chopper in the poll-bound region.

Nine Lok Sabha seats in Bengal are to vote in the seventh phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 19. Meanwhile, the voting in the remaining 31 seats in the state had already taken place. The counting of votes will take place on May 23. In the Lok Sabha Elections 2014, the Trinamool Congress had bagged 34 out of the 42 Parliamentary seats in the state.
