New Delhi, May 30: Narendra Modi will be sworn in as the 16th Prime Minister of India in this evening for a second straight term after his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered an incredible victory in the Lok Sabha elections. All eyes will be on Narendra Modi's choices for cabinet ministers as some of the present members of his council of ministers are retiring from politics due to their health.
Leaders who will take oath as ministers will meet PM Modi at 4:30 pm at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, news agency ANI reported. Those who have received a call to be present are Piyush Goyal, Smriti Irani, Babul Supriyo, Sadanand Gowda, Giriraj Singh, Bhupinder Yadav, Harsimrat Kaur, Dharmendra Pradhan and Mukhat Abbas Naqvi. Sushma Swaraj, who served as External Affairs Minister during Modi's first term and earned a lot of respect, may opt out as she is not in the best of health. If Swaraj decides to continue, she will have to become a Rajya Sabha member. Some reports say Nirmala Sitharaman will continue as Defence Minister. Arun Jaitley on Wednesday opted out of the new cabinet and there is no clarity who will fill in his shoes.
According to an IANS report, the four big ministries - Home, Finance, Defence and External Affairs - would be distributed among Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj and Nitin Gadkari. Rajnath Singh may get Home, Sushma Swaraj External Affairs, Amit Shah Defence and Nitin Gadkari Finance. Late on Wednesday, Rajnath Singh, Prakash Javadekar, Smriti Irani, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Rajyavardhan Rathore met President Amit Shah to confirm that they may be part of Modi's council of ministers.
Ravi Shankar Prasad, Dharmendra Pradhan and Narendra Singh Tomar will also join the Cabinet. Rajnath Singh met the Prime Minister also. Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut confirmed that his party colleague Arvind Sawant will become a minister.
