Amit Shah Proposes to Extend President's Rule in Jammu And Kashmir, Opposition Backs Extension
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday proposed in Rajya Sabha to extend the President's rule in Jammu and Kashmir by six months.
New Delhi, July 1: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday proposed in Rajya Sabha to extend the President's rule in Jammu and Kashmir by six months. The President's rule in Jammu and Kashmir ends tomorrow. Opposition parties including Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Samajwadi Party (SP) supported the resolution moved by Amit Shah to extend the President's rule in Jammu and Kashmir.
"I have brought the proposal to extend by 6 months the President's rule in Jammu and Kashmir which is ending tomorrow," Shah said in Upper House of Parliament. SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav announced that his party supports an extension of the President's rule in Jammu and Kashmir. TMC MP Derek O'Brien, while announced to support the resolution, argued that the Lok Sabha polls could be held, so can the Assembly elections. Backing the resolution, BJD MP Prasanna Acharya said that since the President's rule in the state is ending tomorrow, it is crucial to extend it. JDU'S Ram Chandra Prasad Singh said that he had the opportunity to work under the President's rule and claimed that a lot of work happens during it. The Lok Sabha last week gave its nod for the extension of President's Rule in Jammu and Kashmir by six months from July 3. Shah had then said that the Election Commission agreed to postpone the Assembly elections and that these will be held after the upcoming Amarnath Yatra.
"Whenever the Election Commission decides to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir, polls will be held and the Centre will not intervene. Earlier, EC was controlled by the Congress, but we don't do the same," Shah had said while addressing the Lok Sabha.
