Earlier in the day, the government clarified that there is no proposal for preparing nationwide National Register of Citizens or NRC on the basis of data to be collected during the updation of NPR. Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said, “We have never said that NPR (National Population Register) will be used as NRC. Amit Shah's Statement:

The Home Minister while speaking on implementing pan-India NRC, said, " There is no need to debate this( pan-India NRC) as there is no discussion on it right now, PM Modi was right, there is no discussion on it yet either in the Cabinet or Parliament."

The Union Cabinet approved the NPR amid the ongoing protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and NRC. As per the proposal, the exercise to update NPR would be held between April and September 2020 in all states and Union Territories.
