New Delhi, April 6: The Indian National Congress personnel on Friday met officials of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in New Delhi and discussed several issues that the party said were “crucial” in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The Congress delegation was made up of Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Randeep Singh Surjewala, Ahmed Patel and Jairam Ramesh. Accusing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah of filing a false affidavit of his income declaration, the grand old party asked ECI to disqualify him from contesting Gandhinagar in Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress said that Shah has made two glaring omissions in his affidavit. "First, with regard to a plot in Gandhinagar and second, with regard to loans taken from a commercial bank by his son for which he is the guarantor," the Congress said in its complaint filed before the ECI.
The grand old party also alleged that Shah mortgaged two of his properties for his son Jay Shah’s company before filing his nomination for the Lok Sabha polls from Gandhinagar. 'Modi Ki Sena' Row: Yogi Adityanath Censured by Election Commission, Asked to 'Be More Careful'.
"The properties were mortgaged in lieu of a large and substantial loan of Rs 25 crore extended by the bank to his son’s company. It is, therefore, a fact that the properties are mortgaged to Kalupur Commercial Cooperative Bank and hence constitute a liability that should have been declared," the party said, according to news agency IANS.
"The Election Commission of India must take immediate note of this and initiate appropriate proceedings to disqualify Amit Shah from contesting the upcoming elections. Further, the ECI must initiate proceedings against Amit Shah for the filing of a false affidavit," the complaint read.
The party also urged the ECI to take cognizance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments during a speech in Maharashtra's Wardha in which he had questioned AICC president Rahul Gandhi’s decision to contest from Kerala's Wayanad. The complaint was also filed against UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi for "Modi ki Sena" comment. The EC has issued a notice to Adityanath for his comment and sought his response.
