Lucknow, May 23: The BJP candidate from Amethi, Smriti Irani, is leading from the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency against Congress President Rahul Gandhi, as per the early trends emerging from the counting of votes. Smriti Irani, who had also contested from the Amethi Lok Sabha seat in the year 2014, was defeated by Rahul Gandhi. However, the BJP made the Amethi seat a matter of prestige and decided to field Irani again against Rahul Gandhi. As the latest trends show, Smriti Irani is leading from the Amethi seat, which is considered to be a Congress bastion. Voting took place for the Amethi seat in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 6. A total voter turnout of 57. 07 per cent was recorded in this phase of polling in UP, as per Election Commission of India.
The candidates who are contesting from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency which will go to polls on Monday, May 6 are: Rahul Gandhi of the Congress party, Smriti Irani of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party(SP)-Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) alliance did not name a candidate from the seat.
