Chandigarh, October 24: Anil Vij of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won Ambala Cantt Vidhan Sabha Constituency in Haryana. Vij defeate Independent candidate Chitra Sarwara by over 20,000 votes. Even in 2014 Haryana Assembly elections, Vij emerged victorious by defeating Congress candidate by a margin of 15462 votes. In the last elections, the BJP had a vote share of 52.49% in the Ambala Cantt seat. Vij had also won this seat in 2019 polls by defeating Congress candidate by a margin of 6338 votes.
Polling in the Ambala Cantt Vidhan Sabha Constituency was held on October 21, 2019 along with assembly elections in Maharashtra. The sitting MLA from the Ambala Cantt constituency is Anil Vij of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP has fielded Vij even this year for the upcoming polls in the state. The term of the Haryana assembly ends on November 2.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) in September had announced the election schedule for Haryana. According to the schedule of Haryana polls announced by the Election Commission, the date of filing nomination papers was till October 4 and the deadline for withdrawing them was October 7. Candidates were allowed to withdraw candidature till October 7. In Haryana, the BJP-led Manohar Lal Khattar government is currently in power. The political parties that were a part of the poll battle include BJP, Haryana Janhit Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). In the 2014 polls in the state, the BJP had won with a thumping majority and had scripted history in the state. The BJP had won 47 seats, while the Congress managed to win only 15 seats.
