The results of the Alappuzha Lok Sabha Constituency will be declared today. The counting of votes began on the Alappuzha seat in Kerala at 8 am on Thursday, May 23. Polling took place for the Alappuzha Lok Sabha Constituency in the third phase on April 23. A total voter turnout of 80.09 per cent was recorded, as per Election Commission of India. Alappuzha also known as Alleppey is a district in the Indian state of Kerala. It is one among the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. Alappuzha is world famous for its backwaters, is home to fishing communities and ranks third in literacy rate in Kerala. The constituency number of Alappuzha is 15. The CPI(M) has fielded sitting MLA of Aroor constituency, AM Ariff to contest the elections from Alappuzha. The 54-year-old has been representing the constituency since 2006. Meanwhile, BJP has fielded Dr K S Radhakrishnan in Alappuzha. Radhakrishnan is a former PSC Chairman and Vice-Chancellor of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in Kalady. AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal who won both 2009 and in 2014 elections is the sitting MP of Alappuzha. He refused to contest elections citing organisational duties. The place is known as the birthplace of communism and has roots in the pre-Independence times. Despite having strong communist roots, the district has not elected CPI(M) to power many times. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has held the seat only four times, in the 13 Lok Sabha elections that the constituency has witnessed. Venugopal had defeated his closest competitor, CPI(M)’s CB Chandrababu by a margin of 19,400 votes in 2014.

The Lok Sabha elections 2019 was held between April 11 and May 19 in seven phases. In Kerala, voting was held in a single phase. During the third phase, the polling was held in 115 Lok Sabha constituencies of 14 states. The counting of votes was held on May 23 and thereafter the results were declared.
