Aizwal, December 11: The elections for 40-member Mizoram assembly were held on November 28. The counting of votes has begun today. The Election Commission will declare result by evening. This time also the main competition is between the Congress and the Mizoram National Front (MNF). However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which failed to win even a single seat in the state will also be looking to make an impact on the final result. The exit polls gave lead to the MNF in Mizoram. As per the exit polls, the state may witness a hung assembly for the first time. In the 2013 elections, the Congress managed to win 34 seats, while the MNF bagged only five seats, while the NPP won a single seat. The state has 87 percent Christian population. 1) Aizwal South-II (ST): This constituency is held by Lt Col Zosangzuala of the Congress. In 2013, Lt Col Zosangzuala got 40.0 percent of the votes. 2) Aizwal South-III (ST): K.S.Thanga of the Congress is the sitting MLA from this constituency. He beat Tawnluia of the MNF. Thanga also won the 2008 election. 3) Lengteng (ST): The constituency of Lengteng is a part of Mizoram’s Champhai district and is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates. H. Rohluna won the seat in the 2013 and the 2008 Assembly elections. L Thangmawia of the MNF and Laldinngheti of the BJP contested against Rohluna in these elections. 4) Tuichang (ST): The constituency of Tuichang is a part of Mizoram’s Champhai district and is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates. Lalrinliana Sailo of the Congress won this constituency in 2008 and 2013 assembly elections. For the 2018 elections, Congress candidate James Thanghmingmawia contested against Mizo National Front's Tawnluia, while BJP's Laiduhpuii is also in the fray. 5) Champhai North (ST): The constituency is currently held by T T Zothansanga of the Congress. In the 2013 Mizoram Assembly Elections, he beat T C Kaphmingthanga of the MNF. In 2008 also, Zothansanga remained victorious from this constituency. In 2018 elections, Zothansanga contested against Z R Thiamsanga of the MNF and C Hrangsatkima of the BJP. 6) Champhai South (ST): The constituency of Champhai South is a part of Mizoram’s Champhai district and is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates. Jh. Rothuama of the Congress won the seat two times in 2008 and 2013 assembly elections. In 2018, it is a key constituency as incumbent Chief Minister Lal Thanhawala contested elections from here. A total of 1,164 polling stations across the state and 15 temporary polling stations specially erected for the Bru voters in Mizoram-Tripura border Kanhmun village in Mamit district was completely peaceful.
