Aizwal, December 11: The counting of votes for the Assembly Elections 2018 in Mizoram has begun today. The Election Commission will declare the result on the same day. The voting was held on November 28 in a single phase. Around 75 percent of votes were polled in the state, which lower than the previous elections. The main competition is between the ruling Congress and the Mizo National Front (MNF). A total of 209 candidates are in the fray. Around 7,70,395 voters decided the fate of the candidates. The Congress has been in power since 2008 and is now eyeing a third consecutive term in the northeastern state. In 2013 assembly elections, the Congress had bagged 34 seats, while the Mizo National Front (MNF) had five and Mizoram People's Conference won one seat. This year, the Congress and the main Opposition, the MNF, fielded 40 candidates each for the upcoming polls. Meanwhile, the BJP contested on 39 seats. 1) Aizawl East-I (ST) – R. Lalrinawma of Congress is the sitting of the constituency. He also won the assembly election of 2008 from the same constituency. In these elections, the Congress fielded K Vanlalrawna. Meanwhile, Zoramthanga contested on the MNF ticket, whereas, the BJP gave the ticket to Laldinliana Sailo. 2) Aizwal East – II (ST) – Lalsawta of the Congress is the sitting MLA from this constituency which is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST). In 2018, MNF fielded Robert Romawia Royte against Lalsawta. 3) Aizawl West-I (ST) – MNF’s K Sangthuama is the sitting MLA from this constituency. The MNF has again fielded Sangthuama in 2018 assembly elections. 4) Aizawl West-II (ST): This constituency is a part of Mizoram’s Aizwal district and is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates. Lalruatkima of the MNF won the seat in the 2013 Assembly elections. He also contested the seat this year on the MNF ticket. 5) Aizawl West-III (ST): The constituency is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST). In 2013 assembly elections, Vanlalzawma of the MNF won the elections in 2013. The Congress fielded Dr C.T. 6) Aizwal South - I (ST): The sitting MLA from the Congress Vanlalvena again contested the elections from this constituency. Meanwhile, K Liantlinga of the MNF and Dr Zonuntluanga of the BJP are also in the fray. This constituency is again reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (ST). In 2013 elections, the ruling Congress won 34 seats out of 40. Meanwhile, in 2018, the exit polls predicted fractured mandate in the state with the MNF in the lead. The BJP is also expected to make inroads in the north-eastern state with 87 percent Christian population.
