New Delhi, September 5: A special CBI court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to former Finance Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram in Aircel Maxis case. The Former union minister was accused of granting approval beyond his capacity. Earlier on September 2, KM Natraj, Additional Solicitor General, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case asserted that P Chidambaram, had received kickbacks for benefitting certain people. CBI judge O P Saini heard the petition filed by Chidambaram and his son Karti seeking anticipatory bail in the case. The order was reserved for today. Natraj opposed the bail plea moved by the accused on the ground that they might tamper with and destroy the evidence.
The case, which is being probed by the CBI and the ED, relates to alleged irregularities in grant of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval in the Aircel-Maxis deal. The FIPB approval was allegedly granted in 2006 when Chidambaram was the Union finance minister. The former finance minister gave approval to proposals involving foreign investment up to Rs 600 crore. P Chidambaram's CBI Custody in INX Media Case Extended by Supreme Court Till September 5.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court rejected his anticipatory bail of Chidambaram in the INX Media case, which is being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The investigation agency can now arrest the former finance minister in the case. Chidamabarm's 15-day CBI is ending today. He was arrested by the CBI on August 22 in connection with the INX media case.
