Ahmednagar Mayor Polls: NCP Leader Nawab Malik Warns Party Corporators of Strict Action For Supporting BJP Candidate

Not only the mayor's seat, NCP's support also ensured that the BJP candidate Malan Dhone got elected for deputy mayor’s post in the Ahmednagar municipal elections.

Mumbai, December 28: NCP leader Nawab Malik, speaking to news agency ANI, said that 18 NCP corporators who defied party orders and supported BJP candidate for Ahmednagar Mayor post, will have to explain the reason behind their motive for doing so. Malik added that a show cause notice will be issued and if the concerned MLAs fail to explain, they will be expelled from the party.

The elections were held in Ahmednagar on December 9 and the results were declared on December 11.

The Shiv Sena had bagged 24 out of the total 68 seats and emerged as the single-largest party. However, the NCP and BJP had won 18 and 14 seats respectively. But all the three parties had its candidates declared for the mayor’s post.

Shiv Sena corporators had decided to boycott the mayoral election at the last moment. Babasaheb Wakale, the BJP candidate for the post, won the mayor's seat with 37 votes, which is two more than the required 35 seats.

Not only the mayor's seat, NCP's support also ensured that the BJP candidate Malan Dhone got elected for deputy mayor’s post in the Ahmednagar municipal elections.

The NCP and its chief Sharad Pawar, have been one of the prominent parties trying to forge a grand alliance against the BJP led NDA government at Centre. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar had recently confirmed that the Congress and NCP will contest the 2019 polls together along with the Peasants and Workers Party of India. Pawar, talking to reporters about the seat sharing arrangement, said that talks have taken place on 40 seats and that only eight seats remain to be finalised.
