Lucknow, May 31: Former Chief Ministers and Samajwadi Party leaders Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav have vacated their official residences in Lucknow on Thursday in compliance with the order of the Supreme Court. The father-son duo vacated their respective bungalows just a few days after they moved to the Supreme Court challenging the order that asked former chief ministers to vacate official bungalows.

Both Mulayam and Akhilesh had moved to the apex court on May 28 demanding an ‘appropriate time’ for vacating their official residences. Both the leaders filed a plea in the backdrop of the Supreme Court’s order that had struck down an amendment in a state legislation which allowed former chief ministers to retain government accommodation even after demitting office.

Yesterday Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati also vacated her official residence, while she retained the second bungalow. Mayawati vacated the bungalow on 6, Lal Bahadur  Shastri Marg, whereas the bungalow on 13A, Mall Avenue has been converted to a memorial of Kanshi Ram, the founder of the party.

Among the former chief ministers, Union Minister Rajnath Singh and Governor of Rajasthan Kalyan Singh have shown their readiness to vacate their official bungalows, while the wife of former chief minister ND Tiwari has sought more time to vacate his official bungalow due to Tiwari’s failing health.
