Lucknow, October 4: The Congress party has served a show-cause notice to its legislator Aditi Singh for attending a special session of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly convened on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Aditi Singh, an MLA from Rae Bareilly, has been asked to respond within two days. Congress had called for a boycott of the special 36-hour session that began on Wednesday.
Defying Congress's diktat, Aditi Singh attended the session and spoke in the House. All major opposition parties, including Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Congress and SBSJ, boycotted the proceedings, claiming the state government was just out to set a record. Speaking to reporters, Singh had said that she came to the house and participated in discussions as she felt that it was an appropriate thing to do.
"If you heard my speech, I only spoke about development and sustainable development goals. I practice politics the way my father used to do it -- whatever I feel is correct, I do it," Singh said. When asked if she had deviated from the party line, the legislator responded: "I rose above party line and tried to speak on the development... This is my first and foremost priority." She said that she was ready to face any action.
Interestingly, a day after she attended the special session, the Uttar Pradesh government provided "Y- Plus" category security to Aditi Singh. She had earlier met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath seeking adequate security after motorcade was attacked on May 14. Her car had turned turtle when she was on her way to Rae Bareilly along with Zila Panchayat members for a floor test against Awadhesh Singh, who is District Panchayat Chief.
Awadhesh Singh is the brother of former Congress MLC Dinesh Pratap Singh who contested the Lok Sabha election against UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
