New Delhi, March 29: Jumping the bandwagon to counter Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "sarab" (alcohol) jibe against the Opposition, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said it does not befits the position which the PM holds. Taking the political discourse to a new low, the party's Rajya Sabha lawmaker Sanjay Singh compared Modi to a "roadside politician".

Singh's remarks against the PM was preceded by AAP UP spokesperson's sharp jibe against Modi, saying that one who issues such statements is "not even fit to be a class monitor". Watch: Lok Sabha Elections 2019 Weekly Wrap -- From Rahul Gandhi's 'NYAY' to Narendra Modi's 'Mission Shakti'

In what could be considered derogatory, Singh said a probe should be conducted to ascertain whether the Prime Minister himself consumes narcotic substances.

Here's What the 2 AAP Leaders Tweeted:

The 'sarab' row erupted after the Prime Minister, while addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut, coined it as an acronym for the coalition of Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Lok Dal and Bahujan Samaj Party. "Sarab is harmful for your health. Everyone must be warned about them," Modi had said.

Reacting to the jibe, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said the PM should understand the difference between "sarab and sharaab". His BSP counterpart Mayawati said the comments reflect the "casteist" mindset of Modi. Congress, meanwhile, sought an apology from the Prime Minister for referring to the political parties established under a democratic setup as "liquor".
