The step has come following the rising use of plastic, which is endangering the environment, especially, the marine life. The Mumbai civic body after the ban has collected 1.42 lakh kg of plastic. However, it is still finding a mechanism to recycle the same.
Furthermore, the civic body has also planned to impose fine from the general public, shops and establishments from June 23. Reportedly, the civic body has decided to take Rs. 5, 000 as fine from first-time offenders. Also, to provide some leeway to general public from the hefty fine, it has proposed to reduce the fine from Rs. 5000 to Rs. 200 for a common man. The proposal has been sent to state government who will decide on the fine money now, following which the fines will be imposed.
