Mumbai, Sep 17: Prices of petrol has crossed Rs 90 mark for a litre in at least 12 cities across Maharashtra. Petrol is being sold for over Rs 90 per litre in Parbhani, Nandurbar, Nanded, Latur, Jalna, Jalgaon, Hingoli, Gondia, Buldhana, Beed, Aurangabad and Ratnagiri. In Parbhani, where the fuel prices are the highest in the country, petrol cost Rs 91.15 a litre.
Due to 25 per cent value-added tax (VAT) on petrol in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and 26 per cent in the rest of the state, fuel rates are higher in Maharashtra. In Mumbai, petrol is being sold at Rs 89.44 per litre. Diesel rates are over Rs 78 in many cities in the state. The state charge 21 per cent VAT on diesel in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, and 22 per cent in rest of the state. While state governments of West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Karnataka have announced a recution in excise duty on petrol and diesel, bringing some relief to the citizens, the Maharashtra government has so far not taken any such decision. The transportation cost of fuel is adding to woes of common men in Maharashtra.

“In Parbhani, the prices are high as the city gets its fuel supply from Solapur depot, which is about 275km away,” a petrol pump owner from Parbhani told Hindustan Times. Prabhani is the first city where petrol price went beyond Rs 90 in the country. Fuel prices in the country have been going up almost daily since August 1. They fell only once on August 13 and have been on record levels for nearly two weeks now. The rising prices have burnt a hole in the pockets of consumers. Since the beginning of 2018, the petrol price in Delhi has gone up by 15.4 per cent from Rs 69.97 on January 1, 2018. The hike in diesel price has been even steeper. It has gone up by 22 per cent since January 1 when it cost Rs 59.70.
