Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday expressed conceraned over rising fuel prices and said that petrol and diesel should come under the ambit of Goods and Services Tax (GST). “I want petrol and diesel to come under the ambit of GST. The GST Council should take a decision on this. State governments are more powerful than the Centre in the GST Council meeting,” Pradhan said. The constant rise in fuel prices have burnt a hole in the pockets of consumers. Petrol, Diesel Prices Cut by Rs 2 in Karnataka as HD Kumaraswamy Reduces Cess on Fuel.

Despite being criticised, the central government has maintained that external factors, including a rise in international crude oil prices, are influencing domestic fuel prices. Prices of petrol and diesel have been going up almost daily since August 1. They fell only once on August 13 and have been on record levels for nearly two weeks now. The constant rise in fuel prices is primarily attributed to high crude oil prices and a falling rupee.

Prices of petrol has crossed Rs 90 mark for a litre in at least 12 cities across Maharashtra. Petrol is being sold for over Rs 90 per litre in Parbhani, Nandurbar, Nanded, Latur, Jalna, Jalgaon, Hingoli, Gondia, Buldhana, Beed, Aurangabad and Ratnagiri. In Parbhani, where the fuel prices are the highest in the country, petrol cost Rs 91.15 a litre.
